UPDATE on the DDFA Project to replace 2 Family Tombstones

It is part of our responsibility to see that the tombstones of our ancestors are maintained and treated with respect. There were two tombstones that deserved our attention, those of Jacob Dreisbach and his wife, Magdalena Buchs Dreisbach. As of August, 2023, both have been replaced with new stones. Thank you to all who contributed!

The new stone for Jacob Dreisbach now in place in the cemetery of the Dreisbach Church, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. We do not know why the Civil War marker is there - it will be replaced by a Revolutionary War Soldier marker as soon as possible.

The old Tombstone of Martin Dreisbach’s son, Jacob Dreisbach, was located in the cemetery of the Dreisbach Church near Lewisburg, PA. Find-a-Grave ID 21661145 It was a replacement of the original stone which has disappeared and the information on it about his Revolutionary War service is incorrect. Additionally there are no dates showing his birth and death and he used the “Dreisbach” spelling of his surname not Triesbach as carved on this stone.

The new tombstone for Magdalena Buch Dreisbach (placed in front of her original stone) was properly dedicated at our August 2023 reunion. Verse: God, my Redeemer lives and often from the skies looks down and watches all my dust till He shall bid it rise

The broken tombstone of Jacob Dreisbach’s wife, Magdalena Buchs. After the early death of her husband, she and their children went west to Ohio. She is buried in the little cemetery beside the Dresbach Church on Tarlton Road, Pickaway Co. OH. Find-a-Grave ID 21662580

Jacob (1750-1804) and Magdalena Dresbach (1757-1836)

Johann Jacob Dreisbach born 7 Dec.1750 in Krombach, Siegerland, Germany, died in 1804 in Union County, PA. He married Maria Magdalena Buchs born 15 Mar.1757 in New Jersey, died15 Feb 1836 in Ohio. There are problems with both tombstones. Jacob's tombstone is located in the cemetery of the Dreisbach Church in Lewisburg, Union Co., PA. It is not the original. We do not know when, or by whom it was replaced. However...

1) There are no dates of birth or death on the stone

2) His surname is incorrectly spelled

3) Jacob's Revolutionary War service is incorrect

The people responsible for this tombstone conflated Northumberland County, PA and Northampton County, PA. They inscribed the Rev. War service for a "Jacob Dreisbach of Northampton County," the son of Simon Dreisbach Jr" instead of the Rev. War service for "Jacob Dreisbach of Northumberland County" son of Martin Dreisbach. Note - in 1813 Union County was carved out of Northumberland County, PA not Northampton County Pa.

The tombstone of his wife has been broken for years. After Jacob died in 1804, Magdalena and their children went west to Ohio traveling with Jacob’s brother, Henry. Her tombstone is in the small cemetery beside the old Dresbach Church on the boundary between Pickaway and Fairfield County, Ohio.

A bit of history of the DDFA Tombstone Project: David Kuwayama (his mother is a Dresback) discovered the erroneous inscription on the tombstone of his ancestor, Jacob Dreisbach, in the cemetery near Lewisburg, PA. He brought this to the attention of the DDFA with the suggestion that Jacob deserves a correct tombstone. A committee was formed of David Kuwayama, Sharon Driscoll, Rachel Meyer and Marcia Falconer to look into replacing Jacob's stone.

Sharon pointed out the tombstone of Jacob's wife was in dire shape and has long been broken in half. It is located in the Cemetery of the Dresbach Church near Circleville, Ohio. Sharon suggested the DDFA replace them both. Many members of the DDFA made donations to cover the cost of two new tombstones. Both new tombstones are now in their proper place.

THANK YOU TO ONE AND ALL who contributed!

Recent genealogy DATABASE CORRECTION:

THE TWO CATHARINES AND THE TWO BAUMANS: The Dreisbach Book (pub. 1998) was compiled from genealogies sent by snail mail to the book editors. The entries were not vetted so there are errors. One of these concerns the marriage of two cousins named Catharine Dreisbach to two brothers named Bauman.

The information on page 70 is incorrect. Catharine, the daughter of Jost (1721-1794) married Bernard Bauman (1749-1821) NOT Henry Bauman as shown in The Dreisbach Book. The children of Catharine and Bernard Bauman are found on pp. 78 and 79.

On page 78, Catherine, the daughter of Adam (1722-1803) married Henrich Bauman (1751-1824) NOT Bernard Bauman as listed in The Dreisbach Book. Their children are found on pp. 70 and 71. The evidence for the correct wife/husband pair comes from the will of Elizabeth Dreisbach, the wife of Jost Dreisbach, in which the correct pairs are named.

D. Kline, A descendant of Adam Dreisbach through his daughter Catharine married to Henrich Bauman and through their son Henrich Bauman Jr married to Susanna Eberhart, has contributed a referenced list of their children, see below.
