Jacob Dresback - 1779 - 1857

Jacob Dresback
Appendix G of The Dreisbach Book, 1998, p. 31, section 6d:

Moved from PA to OH

Born: Pennsylvania c1779

Died: Logan Cty, OH 1857

According to descendants, Jacob Dresback was born in Pennsylvania in 1779, and moved to Ohio at an unknown time in the early 1800's.  He settled first in Fairfield County.  Jacob and his wife, whose name is not known, had six children.  In 1835 Jacob moved to Logan County with four of his children, where he died in 1857.  Records of Logan County land transactions between Jacob and his sons William and Barnard Dresback are dated 1845 and 1851.  Descendants of Jacob Dresback are still living in Ohio.

Jacob Dresback does not seem to be connected to the many Dresbach and Dreisbach descendants of Martin Dreisbach living in Ohio. It is almost certain he and his older brother Abraham Dreisbach, were the sons of John George Dreisbach (1756-1826). John George was deaf son of Simon Dreisbach Jr (1730-1806). He married Sophia Young/Jung (1755-1834).

It is possible that he is the John Dreisbach (actually John Jacob Dreisbach) mentioned by Rev. John Dreisbach in his text, A Short History of Another Branch of Dreisbachs.  This text contains a number of half-truths, calling Simon and Martin first cousins (they are now known to have been third cousins), and confusing the sons of Simon Sr. with those of Simon Jr.  However, Rev. John makes clear mention of three brothers of the Simon line: Abraham, who settled in Ohio, and Yost and John who both lived on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River "above Berwick."  John, the youngest of the three, was born like his brothers in Northampton County, and was baptized John Jacob at Zion Stone Church in 1779.  The name and year agree, but it remains to be seen if John Jacob Dreisbach left the shores of the Susquehanna to settle in Ohio as Jacob Dresback.

George Tricebock - 1826 - 1893

Appendix M of The Dreisbach Book, 1998, p. 32, section 6f:

Born in U.S., parents unknown

Born: Philadelphia, PA 1826

Died: Philadelphia, PA 1893

George Tricebock was not an immigrant, but was born in Philadelphia on 3 August 1826.  His parents have not been identified.  He married Margaret Campbell, and the couple set up housekeeping in Philadelphia.  They died in 1893 and 1907 respectively, and are buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Two children are known, both born in Philadelphia: John B. Tricebock, born 3 December 1848, who later married Margaret Jane Johnson, and Sarah (Sallie) Tricebock, born 31 October 1850, who married Charles Burk.  John B. and Margaret Jane Tricebock had ten children, of which three sons and five daughters are married.  To date, only one descendant, great-granddaughter Jean Elva Earling,  nee Coffren, is known.

The name Tricebock is obviously an anglicized form of Dreisbach.  Such a spelling change can have taken place at any time in the early generations of the family.

In 1806, two Dreisbach families from Wittgenstein arrived in Philadelphia, headed by Georg Dreysbach and Georg Heinrich Dreysbach.  They had a number of sons, any one of which might have been the father of this George, giving him the grandfather's name.  There is no proof of connection, however, and further details on these families are lacking.

Schuylkill Dreisbachs
-
Ancestors of Oliver Dreisbach 1881

Appendix P of The Dreisback Book

Appendix P of TDB listed an Oliver Dreisbach of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, a county that had not been extensively researched at the time of publication.  Oliver turns out to be "the tip of the iceburg".  Since that time, many family members (identified as well as unidentified) have come to light.  The earliest Dreisbach known appeared in Schuylkill Co. in 1810.  His name was Simon, and his parents are unknown (although it seems likely that he would come from the Simon line.)

Although some of these relationships are unproven, here is a preliminary construction of a tree for the Schuylkill branch of the family:

John Dreisbach - 1790 - unknown
(Newport, Luzerne County, PA)

Supplement Section A

Parents unknown

Born: Pennsylvania 1790

Died: Newport, Luzerne Cty, PA

Buried in the Newport Cemetery, Luzerne Co, PA, is a very mysterious John Dreisbach whom we've been unable to link to any family so far (along with a Wilhelm who is probably related to him in some way.)  His descendants settled in Kosciusko Co, Indiana.  Perhaps his family moved there after his death in 1843.

Solano Bill Dresbach - 1834 - 1901

One of our ongoing mysteries

Surfing the Internet, we recently discovered a hitherto unknown Dreisbach immigrant, one who was extremely colorful!

Davisville - nearly Veranda City - founded (excerpt)
Information for this article came from the Solano Genealogy Society and the Yolo County Library.

William Dresbach was born in Halve, Germany in 1834. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1852. Passed away 28 Jun 1901 at his residence in Davis, California. Interment was at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Deceased leaves a widow and four children. The latter are Mrs. H. H. Fuller, Miss Florence Dresbach, Miss Irnia Dresbach and William Dresbach Jr. The latter is employed in the ticket office of the Oceanic Steamship Company. (Source: https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=SFC19010629.2.2&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------1)

William Dresbach, a native of Prussia, was the tenant of the Proprietors of Davisville and he is considered responsible for naming the town Davisville. The alternative suggestion was Veranda City.

Dresbach built the first commercial structure, which served as a general store. For this, he goes down in Davis history as its first merchant.

When the post office was established, Dresbach was the postmaster, as well as the agent for Wells Fargo and Co. His business transactions often reached $15,000 a month.

Settlers' nickname for Dresbach was "Solano Bill." He gained this name when he was postmaster of the old Solano post office, which had been established in 1862 in or near Solano House.

The Solano House was a stage stop located on the wagon road between Benicia and Sacramento and was just across Putah Creek from the Davis homestead and was thus in Solano County.

Some historical accounts have it that Davisville was originally within the Solano County border. This misrepresentation seems to arise from the fact that this post office served the residents of the area prior to establishment of their own post office.

Because the post office was not yet set up in Davisville by March 1868, it is recorded that the Davisville post office was located in Solano County. The post office was moved to Davisville in June 1868.

604 2nd St., Davis, California (1875)
The Dresbach-Hunt-Boyer Mansion, a two story Italianate house topped by a very shallow hipped roof, is a superb example of the style and one of the few remaining mansions in the downtown area. The 12 room, 3500 square foot main house and 340 square foot water tower were built between 1871 and 1875 by William Dresbach, the original owner and Davisville's first postmaster. Mr. Dresbach is credited with naming the town after rancher Jerome C. Davis. The land on which the mansion sits is likely some of the first residential land purchased in Davisville. Mr. Dresbach, one of Davisville's wealthiest citizens, also owned a livery stable, general store, hotel and saloon, and a grain warehouse. The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Phillip & William Dresbach of Cass County, Il

Little is known of two Dresbachs who settled in Arenzville, a town in Cass County Illinois founded by German immigrant Francis Arenz. It is possible that these Dresbachs (whom we assume to be brothers) were among the founders of his town, for Phillip painted portraits of Francis and his wife in 1854. Their place of origin is repeatedly listed as "Prussia" in census records, so it is likely that they were immigrants. Their families are buried in Arenzville.

Dated 1854. Painted by P. Dresback,
a German artist.
Francis Arenz:
Born October 31, 1800, in Germany.
Came to America in 1827.
Arenzville was named for him in 1852.
He died April 3, 1856, in Arenzville, Illinois.

Francis Arenz's active participation in the pioneer life of Arenzville covered a period of 20 years, from 1833 when he bought the grist mill on Indian Creek, to 1853 when he sold the mill and Arenzville was organized as a village. The village had been laid out by Arenz in 1849.
