Obituary of Simon Dresbach (Dreisbach)

From the "Carroll Co. Mirror", 19 Mar 1867, Ill Hist Lib, Springfield, Ill
A large concourse of friends were present last Sabbath, at the funeral rites attendant upon the burial of Elder Simon Dresbach. He was born  in Union County, Pennsylvania, March 4, 1802, being the oldest son of Martin Dresbach, Esq.  While he was but a boy his parents emigrated to Ohio--the then far West. On the journey he had the irreparable misfortune of losing his mother, whom the family buried before reaching their new home. When about sixteen years of age he was converted to the Christian faith, and connected himself with the "United Brethren in Christ"; and when twenty-one years of age he commenced his ministry as a preacher of the Gospel. He labored for some years very efficiently in his adopted State, but subsequently removed to his early home in Pennsylvania, where he was noted for his Christian zeal in the ministry, in connection with Bishop Pab of the "United Brethren", and Rev. John Winebrenner of the "Church of God".

In 1820 he was united in marriage to Miss Frances Bowman, of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.  He lived to see his famiiy of seven children grown up around him, with many grand children to bless his old age. With the exception of one grandchild, his was the first death in the family.

For many of the latter years of his life he was sorely afflicted, and his physical frame became very feeble.    In the hopes of recruiting his health about two years ago he removed from his Eastern home to Mount Carroll, where, during his short stay with us, he won the Good opinion of the entire community.  His spirit was singularly gentile and subdued, and proved that he had long been a follower of Him who was "meek and lowly of heart". He not only had learned  to face death with calmness, but eagerly longed for the dread messenger, that he might be removed to a world where sin and sorrow, disease and pain, and doubt and fear are unknown.

He departed this life on the 12th inst. and on Sunday his funeral sermon was preached, by Elder Saacmakle of Chicago. The sympathies of the community are with the widow and his children in their affliction.
